Medical Council requests PCS enrolment data from training bodies
The Medical Council recently requested the Medical Council Numbers for all doctors currently enrolled on the 2016/17 Professional Competence Schemes, which began on the 1st May 2016.  This data was required by the Medical Council before 17th October 2016.

The Medical Council recently requested the Medical Council Numbers for all doctors currently enrolled on the 2016/17 Professional Competence Schemes, which began on the 1st May 2016.  This data was required by the Medical Council before 17th October 2016.

As a recognised postgraduate training body, we were required under our contractual arrangements with the Medical council to supply this data.

All doctors who were not enrolled on the Professional Competence Scheme before 17th October 2016 received an email from the Medical Council pointing out that they are not enrolled in Professional Competence Scheme for 2016/2017 and that in order to retain registration with the Medical Council, doctors are required to declare that they are enrolled in a Professional Competence Scheme.  Failure to enrol is a breach of the legislative arrangements.  Doctors were instructed to contact their relevant training body and enrol without further delay.  There was no requirement to contact the Medical Council directly at this point in time.

The Medical Council wants to improve their understanding of any barriers to enrolling in a Professional Competence Scheme. To enable this, they have invited doctors to participate in a short survey about enrolment.

If you have any queries or concerns regarding this, please contact the PCS helpdesk pcs@rcsi.ie

New PCS Handbook launched, November 2016

In response to our Survey earlier this year, we received many responses regarding the PCS online portal.  There were a number or recurring themes and in order to address these we have compiled a new handbook which we hope will address a number of the issues highlighted in the survey – this handbook is an overview of the PCS requirements and incorporates all the guidelines and resources in relation to the PCS online portal - click here for the handbook.

If you would like to receive a ‘print’ copy of this handbook please forward your mailing address to pcs@rcsi.ie and we will be happy to post a copy of the handbook to you.

We also launched a range of new online resources to help users navigate the portfolio and these are available here

Please also visit our ‘useful links’ section on the website where there are a number of useful documents and templat

Maintaining Professional Competence
The Professional Competence Schemes are now in the 6th year and the Medical Council are keen to explore ways on how the scheme can be improved.

The Professional Competence Schemes are now in the 6th year and the Medical Council are keen to explore ways on how the scheme can be improved.  Over the next few months, the Postgraduate Training Bodies will be meeting with the Medical Council to review the current scheme and discuss key initiatives in relation to what improvements can be made.

RCSI is committed to supporting doctors enrolled on the Professional Competence Scheme.  If you have any suggestions on how the Scheme can be improved, we would be delighted to hear from you.  Please email pcs@rcsi.ie with your suggestions and we can bring them to the meetings with the Medical Council.
